Nail Fungus
Onychomycosis refers to the fungal infection of the toenails. It is not a life-threatening condition, but it still may cause physical and occupational limitations, pain, discomfort, and embarrassment.
Common fungi that infect toenails become entrenched in the nail plate, they have a tendency to spread to adjacent toes in many individuals. Thickened fungal nails also have a tendency to become painful and ingrown over time. As the nails thicken, they press against the shoe, causing pressure and pain. About 10% of Americans (23 million people) and as many as 90% of elderly people suffer from toenail fungus.
Treatment For Toenail Fungus
Treatment for toenail fungus:
- Over the counter topicals
- Prescription topicals
- Oral anti-fungal medication
- PinPointe Laser
- Sometimes we use a combination of many of these in extreme fungus cases
Dr. McGowan Explains:
"Nail fungus is one of the most difficult pathologies we treat. It takes a long time to get 100% better and the patient has to have full investment to see results. Oral medication is taken for 90 days but it can take a year to see improvement and the same for the PinPointe Laser. Some patients start to see results in 6 months and others can take over a year!"
